Are you suffering from a decline in your visual skills and abilities, arising from sickness, an accident, or old age? Visit us at Dr. Greg Wacasey’s private clinic located in Longview, Texas. Dr. Greg Wacasey is a practicing and licensed therapeutic optometrist with years of experience and success. Vision therapy can be defined as eye care exercises aimed at improving one’s visual abilities. Vision therapy enables a person to see with comfort, ease, and efficiency. The therapy can be supplemented by the use of prisms, computer programs, and therapeutic lenses. It is mainly carried out in the following ways:

Behavioral/Perceptual Vision Therapy

This involves psychoeducational intervention that is intended to correct perceptual-cognitive deficiencies. These deficiencies are thought to impede the development of speech and language abilities in pre-school children. Behavioral therapy is mainly carried out through the use of exercises that improve visual processing and perception.

Correction of Myopia and Hyperopia

Myopia is caused by the image being focused in front of the eye, causing blurriness. Having an eye that is too long for the eye is a prime factor. To correct the condition, concave (divergent) lenses are used. The concave lens is used to spread the light onto the eye, thereby focusing the image on the eye.

Optometrists also use pinhole (synoptic) glasses to correct myopia. Pinhole glasses are typically eyeglasses whose lenses are filled with grids of miniature holes. These glasses promote eye focus by shielding the eyes from indirect and excessive rays of light.

With hyperopia, the image from nearby objects is focused behind the retina. This results from the eyeball being too short. Hyperopia is corrected by utilizing convex (converging) lenses. The lenses focus the images on the retina by increasing the focusing power of the lens.

Orthoptic Vision Therapy

Orthoptic therapy makes use of orthoptics. Orthoptics are exercises that are used to improve binocular function and correct convergence insufficiency. Convergence insufficiency is the incapacity to maintain binocular function while working at a close distance.

Orthoptics are carried out in office-based sessions that are supplemented with home-based workouts. Pediatric ophthalmologists and orthoptists set up eye exercises to:

  • Determine visual acuity
  • Evaluate and measure eye deviations
  • Manage the treatment of amblyopia (reduction of visual acuity that is unattributable to abnormal eye structures)
  • Treat minor intermittent symptomatic eye deviations.
