What Is Computer Vision Syndrome? What Can You Do about It?

What Are the Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome?

This syndrome is a group of symptoms commonly suffered by people who stare at screens for a long stretch of time. Looking at a bright screen, especially one with glare, such as from a nearby window, strains the eyes. It can exacerbate any preexisting myopia, aging-related vision loss, and other eye care conditions. You may notice symptoms like:

  • blurred vision
  • persistently dry eyes
  • tired eyes
  • eye discomfort, especially when blinking
  • headaches
  • jaw, neck, and shoulder pain

What Is Involved in Computer Vision Treatment?

Prevention is your first line of defense against these issues. Your optometrist will probably examine your eyes and test your vision to rule out other possible causes. If you do indeed suffer from computer vision syndrome, an optometrist will counsel you on small changes you can make to reduce or eliminate these symptoms. Some eye care best practices when interacting with digital screens include:

  1. Look away from the screen, ideally at a fairly distant object, every few minutes.
  2. Sit an appropriate distance from the screen, with computers at eye height to reduce strain on the neck and shoulders.
  3. Take breaks and walk away from the device at least once an hour.
  4. Work in a room that is well-lit with indirect light, as direct light sources can cause glare.
  5. Try closing your eyes for a few minutes at a time to give them a break.

Your optometrist may also suggest other forms of computer vision treatment. These may include blue light lens glasses, which can block the most eye-irritating frequencies of light emitted by the screen. Some screen settings can also reduce blue light. You may also be prescribed lubricating eye drops to increase eye comfort as you work.
